"I used to use dance to inform my life. Now I use life to inform my dance."
- Anna Halprin
Our approach to the education of dance is to offer instruction taught by highly
trained professionals with experience and passion in their field. These instructors
bring to the student a focus on method and technique found in NewYork studios, while
at the same time giving the student positive encouragement to obtain their personal
goals.
OUR GOAL
To provide all students, beginner to pre-professional, child to adult, those with
serious aspirations or those just dancing for personal enjoyment; with a state of
the art facility, where each person is encouraged to grow, experiment and enjoy
their art form. We strive to give students the choice of as many performance opportunities
as they wish, or to take only classes and work toward their own personal goals.
Our hope is to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and caring, where everyone
feels safe to explore their own creative possibilities.
Message from the Director of Ballet
As director of Ballet Education I believe that it is the responsibility of our instructors to create a secure, safe, and nurturing environment that enables dancers to achieve their personal best. The welfare of the student is, and will always remain PACC’s top priority. As a faculty we strive to develop not only the technique needed for the advancement of classical studies, but also the creativity and self-esteem needed to succeed in life. It is our sincere belief that the study of classical ballet and dance will enable students to find discipline, beauty and aesthetic pleasure in every action of their lives. Dance is the tool we use to aid in this awakening, as a school we are proud to facilitate this growth.
Departmental emphasis is placed on correct terminology, body placement, alignment, musicality, and individual artistry. Students are placed in levels according to technical ability, not age or at the advancement of their peers. As Director of Ballet Education I take pride in the process of training, evaluation and advancement that we adhere. It is expected for students to remain in one level for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three. Decisions on advancement to the next level are looked upon by a juried group of instructors who base their decisions on: technical proficiency, knowledge of terminology, musicality, turnout, alignment, ability to focus and overall attitude. Formal evaluations for the lower school are done only by request.
Dancers who wish to begin the study of Pointe Work must successfully complete up to Level 3A and be able to consistently demonstrate technical proficiency, the ability to maintain proper use of turnout, core strength as well as a secure demi-pointe. Decisions on the ability to study Pointe are decided upon by the 100% agreement of a juried group of instructors. New Students transferring into PACC who have previously been placed on Pointe may not be allowed to study until they reach the desired proficiency as stated above.
Partnering, or Pas De Deux work is by invitation only. The number of boys who are in attendance for that semester largely determines the number of girls allowed into partnering class.
At the Performing Arts Center of Connecticut, we take pride in the education of your child. Dance education is a process like any other that is entirely individualistic and largely dependant on the effort and dedication put forth on the part of the learner. As a faculty we are committed to giving 100% of ourselves to the technical and artistic development of our students. We believe that dance is an education that far exceeds the ability to manipulate the physical body; it is an education that holds the potential to change the way in which we view the world.
Sincerely,
Adam James Holms
